The profusion of colors, the magnificence of materials, the splendor of decorations and the extraordinary explosion of vegetal and allegorical ornaments fills with wonder and dazzles those who enter its rooms and lounges and its renowned café. This famous multipurpose building seems to be a present the Czech people gave to themselves in the early 1920’s. It celebrated the Czech national ideal, bourgeois and democratic, of which it is a triumphant expression, right under the nose of the Germans who lived on the Na Přikopě street.

The edifice is much loved by the population, it represents the pride of the nation. It was still in use during communism and became the center of the largest collective restoration site after the Velvet Revolution. Meticulous care was given to every detail in order to bring back the prestigious shine of yesteryear.
We have to admit that nowadays, the clientele of the café is mainly composed of tourists passing by. The setting is however luxurious and sparkling, having been restored in a marvelous way. At the back of the large room which glimmers with the thousand sparks of Art Nouveau, the marble statue of the Carrare nymph has regained its seat on the illuminated fountain.
Don’t forget to also have a look at the French restaurant, in the right wing on the first floor, at the old-style Czech pub in the basement, and at the first American bar in Prague on the upper level.
