While the Parisian Cubist movement mainly focused on paintings, Czech Cubist artists experimented in all art fields: paintings, sculptures, but also architecture, furniture, ceramics, graphic design… The exhibition recreates the spirit of the exhibitions of that era, when paintings by Emil Filla and Bohumil Kubišta would be set next to bronze statues by Otto Gutfreund, furniture by Josef Gočár, posters by Jaroslav Benda, ceramics by Pavel Janák…
The displayed works present first-class quality and show how much Czech artists – fascinated by Pablo Picasso’s and Georges Braque’s Parisian plastic studies – managed to create their own style, thus transforming Prague into a major avant-garde center at the beginning of the century.
By the end of the visit, a stop in the Grand Café Orient on the first floor will definitely immerse you in the spirit of that era. The luxurious setting was meticulously recreated based on the original furbishing, where every single detail, from the chandeliers to the wall seats, was designed by Gočar himself.
Cubism aficionados can extend their visit at the Veletržní Palace to discover other works by Czech artists, as well as by artists who inspired them, in the exhibited French art collection.
