Jewish Museum in Prague

Art and history collections of Jews in Bohemia

The old Jewish town, razed to the ground during massive renovation works at the turn of the 19th century, doesn’t exist anymore strictly speaking. Apart from the old Gothic Old-New synagogue that you can visit independently, the other historic synagogues are administered by the Jewish community within a single structure: the Jewish Museum in Prague. Its rich collections belong to the most important in the world and are displayed in various sites that you can access with a single ticket.

The Museum is a central memorial site that enables to learn about the tragic history of the Jewish community, one of the main minorities of Bohemia before the Holocaust.
In the Maisel and the Spanish Synagogues (19th century) you can learn about the history of Jews in Bohemia from the 10th to the 18th centuries, as well as about the emancipation until the present time. At the same time you will be able to admire a collection of items of worship, in particular the beautiful silver works created by renowned silversmiths from the Jewish community.
In the Klausen Synagogue and in the Ceremonial Hall you will discover Jewish customs and traditions, thanks to the presentation of objects that accompany the life of Jews from birth to death.

The Pinkas Synagogue is home to the most deeply moving display of all. The Holocaust drama that almost annihilated the entire Jewish community in Bohemia is remembered here with a Memorial. All the walls of the historic synagogue are covered with the names of the exterminated Jews. On the upper level you will find drawings by children who lived in Terezín, a small town near Prague which was used as a concentration camp before the massive deportation of Jews to extermination camps.
You can end your visit in the famous historic cemetery, also administered by the Museum.
