European paintings from the 16th to the 18th century

At the turn of the 16th century, the Emperor Rudolph II of Habsburg, passionate collector and great patron of the arts, put together in Prague the greatest art collection in Europe, with a renown that crossed Czech borders. The Thirty Years War, which was accompanied by ransacking and looting, scattered for ever this huge collection. What remains, although it was later completed by Rudolph’s successors, is a poor reflection of what it used to be.

The Prague Castle Picture Gallery is located in a wing in the first courtyard of the castle. It displays some beautiful works, although the exhibition is not first-class and lacks dynamism. You can particularly appreciate several Mannerist paintings by painters of the court of Rudolph (Hans van Aachen, Bartholomeus Spranger), interesting collection of 16th century Flemish painters, but mainly some Italian works, in particular from the School of Venice: the beautiful Young Woman at Her Toilet by Titian, the dramatic Passion by Tintoret, a portrait of the antique dealer Jakob König by Veronese, a painting from the early years of Rubens…

The only thing left for you to do will be to imagine, with nostalgia, what the mythic collection of the Emperor Rudolph used to be…
