Sternberg Palace

European art from the Antiquity to the early Baroque

Mere steps from the entrance to the Prague Castle, the big Baroque Palace formerly owned by the counts of Sternberg is home to part of the National Gallery’s European collections.
If you stay in Prague for more than just a few days, you will enjoy a visit in this museum, as much for the exhibited collection as for the palace in itself. Its beautiful ceiling frescos and little cabinets (Chinese and antique) were entirely restored.

As a whole, the collection’s main point of interest is its diversity: you will enjoy going from antique bronze statues to Italian majolicas, from Byzantine icons with Tuscan altarpieces to Flemish landscapes.

Those who like to wander around and take their time will appreciate the surprises offered by the collection that displays some true masterpieces. Amazing portraits will follow you all through your visit: two women of Fayoum, painted with incredible realism, Eleonore of Toledo by Bronzino with a shining and polished face recalling some precious piece of porcelain, portraits by Goya and El Greco charged with intense psychology, another one painted by Rubens, bright and sumptuous… By the end of your visit you will even meet with Dürer himself, who is observing passers-by with severity from the background of one of his major work, the Feast of the Rose Garlands.
