The Czech crown

The Czech Republic became a member of the European Union in 2004, it does however not belong to the euro area and hence uses its own currency, the Czech crown, adopted in 1993 as the Czech national currency. This page will give you information about its exchange rate and about the banknotes and coins used.

The currency used in the Czech Republic is the Czech crown (Kč).

According to the most optimistic projections, the adoption of the euro currency should take place in 2012, but you can already pay with Euros in several places in the Czech Republic: in supermarkets, some restaurants, stores or hotels. You should however be careful as the exchange rates used in such places are usually unfavorable for the customer, and the change (in crowns) is often rounded off to your disadvantage.
We thus recommend that you use the local currency for everyday expenses or that you pay by bank card when possible.

To check what is the current exchange rate of the Czech crown with some of the major foreign currencies, see the webpage of the Exchange company. We also recommend this office to exchange your money while in Prague.

Coins in use:
1 kč, 2 kč, 5 kč, 10 kč, 20 kč, 50 kč
(see coins)

Banknotes in use:

100 kč, 200 kč, 500 kč, 1000 kč, 2000 kč, 5000 kč
(see banknotes)
