The castle is particularly impressive for its strong fortification system, its five-storied Imperial palace and various towers, among which the monumental 60 meter high great dungeon that surmounts the castle. Built on a massive mountain spur, it offers gorgeous views of the surrounding scenery.
Note that due to the very large crowds visiting the site, two circuits are proposed to visitors to discover the interior of the castle: the classic tour typically available, “The royal Lodgings”, includes the visit of various rooms, most of which were converted in the 19th century.
The most precious rooms are only accessible within the second tour, “The Eastern Wing and the Holy Cross Chapel”, which requires a special reservation very much in advance. The tour includes among others the visit of the Saint Mary and the Saint Catherine chapels, adorned with medieval frescos, as well as the renowned Holy Cross Chapel, which used to house the crown and imperial jewels.
Tour I – The Royal Lodgings
The visit includes the historical interiors of the Imperial palace and the lower floor of the Marian tower (Great Hall of Knights, St. Nicolas chapel, Chapter Deanery, Royal Bedroom, Audience and Banquet Halls, Hall of Ancestors, Treasury and Jewels Hall, former castle prison).
Duration of the tour – approx. 50-60 minutes; the tour is held in English by a guide from the castle, your Avantgarde Prague guide will also be present and will be able to answer any additional questions before and after the tour. Open from March to October and during the Christmas period.
Tour II – The Eastern Wing and the Holy Cross Chapel
This tour passes through the Eastern wing of the Royal palace, the upper floor of the Marian tower and the Great dungeon – the most precious interior parts of the castle (Church of Our Lady, St. Catherine chapel, former Sacristy, suspension wooden bridge, museum of lapidary, castle's picture gallery, library, Holy Cross Chapel).
