If you’re looking for a typical neighbourhood pub, the kind of place where Dejvice residents sit with an evening beer and a greasy snack to accompany it, you’ve come to the right place. For years, U Topolů had been the scene of fights between rival football fans, and smoke hung in the air like a curtain. Gradually however, the pub has evolved into a place worth visiting to sample traditional Czech dishes and where the beer is accorded great respect. Amidst the informal atmosphere, neighbours sit down with each other, locals watch football screenings together or toast the birth of new-born children. Besides the meals you’ll find elsewhere in similar pubs, U Topolů is worth mentioning for the generous portions of dumplings with eggs, or toast with a mixture of meats. And then there is the “fragrant” house speciality: fried Olomouc cheese served in a homemade potato pancake.
While waiting for your food or beer, you can study the wall decorations. Some of the old posters publicise concerts of new wave bands or the legendary Sklep theatre. They are remarkable artistic achievements.
