The city of Karlovy Vary was founded in the 14th century by Charles IV. It was bestowed the privileges of a free royal town and was also named after the king. The most glistening historical period was the 19th century and the Belle Époque, when the mild weather, the beneficial healing effects of the springs as well as a rich social life attracted prominent aristocrats, artists, scientists from the whole of central Europe.
The city centre is located in a narrow valley in which the river Teplá flows and is surrounded by deep forests from all directions. From the late nineteenth century golden period, the town centre has preserved the most breathtaking architecture such as elegant colonnades connecting thermal springs, magnificent looking spa buildings and luxurious hotels. This combination helps create a unique urban monument area.
