The Royal Garden of the Prague Castle

Originally a Renaissance garden dating from 1534, inspired by Italian models, the current form of the garden follows an English model dating from the mid-19th century.

The Royal Garden at Prague Castle was founded by Ferdinand I of Habsburg on the site of the original medieval vineyards. Gradually, he bought the older vineyards behind the gorge of the Brusnice stream from the owners, and a Renaissance garden began to grow in this area, which later became famous for its botanical rarities and exotic plants from faraway lands. From the outset, the garden was complemented by a series of buildings used for the entertainment of courtly society: the Ball Games Hall, Queen Anne’s Summer Palace and the Lion Court.

The current form of the garden follows the natural, English design of the mid-19th century, but also contains elements of the Renaissance (the giardinetto of the Royal Summer Palace) and the Baroque (the ornamental flowerbeds).

The garden is open from April 1 to October 31.
