Legend has it that the mythical Princess Libuše had a vision of the glorious future of Prague, "a city whose splendor will reach the stars...". Apart from a prehistoric settlement attested by archaeological remains, the origins of the fortified site of Vyšehrad go back to the 10th century. In turn royal residence, seat of the powerful chapter of Vyšehrad, symbolic center of imperial power under Charles IV, powerful baroque fortress, the site has not escaped destruction in the course of the troubled history of the Czech lands.

The legend was revived in the 19th century, in the middle of the Romantic era and the Czech national revival, with the glorification of Vyšehrad in painting, music and literature, the construction of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul and the creation of an English-style park within the walls. It is no coincidence that Vyšehrad was chosen at the end of the century to house the Slavín, a kind of national pantheon where the most famous Czech personalities are buried and honored. Here you will find, for example, the graves of composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, the female writer Božena Němcová or the romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha.
