Main description

Konopiště Chateau was constructed in the 18th century, replacing a Gothic stronghold. The gradual remodelling transformed the building into a romantic chateau with luxurious interiors. In 1887, Franz Ferdinand d’Este, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, purchased the property, turning Konopiště into a magnificent residence. He regularly spent time there until he was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914.

Karlštejn Castle is linked with another historical figure, Emperor Charles IV, who had the fortress built in the 14th century to house the crown jewels.

At Konopiště Chateau you can choose from 2 guided tours:
* Tour I: Rooms in the South Wing: ceremonial and other chambers: Pink Salon, Dining Room, bedroom, Franz Ferdinand’s collection of hunting trophies, and a wonderful collection of period furniture, paintings, and porcelain.
* Tour II: Rooms in the North Wing: Armoury (the Konopiště collection of weapons and armoury is one of the largest in Central Europe), Smoking Room, Library, the Archduke’s personal lift, Chapel, and others.

At Karlštejn, you’ll visit the historic interiors of the Imperial Palace and the first floor of the Marian Tower (Knights Hall with St Nicholas Chapel, Deanery interiors, Emperor’s Bedchamber, Audience Hall, Banquet Hall, Royal Hall of Ancestors, Treasury and former prison).
