The Czech Republic is a country with a continental climate. This means that it is cold in winter and hot in summer. In summer, there can be significant temperature differences: it is relatively cool in the morning and evening but very hot during the day. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant seasons.
However, it is difficult to give precise weather forecasts due to the frequent temperature inversions. The average temperatures given below are for information purposes only.
What is the best time to visit Prague?
Is there really a best season to visit the city of Prague? In summer? When the days are warm and sunny and all the outdoor terraces are open? In the middle of autumn? If you want to avoid the crowds of tourists and enjoy the city of Prague in beautiful colours? In winter, to see the snow-covered roofs of the city and experience the magic of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve period? Or in spring, to walk in the parks and discover the sublime flower gardens?
In short, as you will have understood, for us, each season has a unique and particular charm. It’s up to you to choose which one you want to discover!
Prague in spring
Although spring begins on March 20, this month is the rainiest of the year. Be sure to bring your k-ways! The Czechs have a saying: "March without rain is April without greenery". Temperatures remain quite low. Bring warm clothes.
Average temperatures are between 0°C and 8°C.
In April, the temperatures start to ease. The trees are budding and the gardens are opening to the public. This is a great opportunity to discover hidden places in the city, which are always closed in winter. Be careful, because the famous English proverb also applies to the Czech Republic: "Ne'er cast a clout til May be out."
Average temperatures range from 4°C to 13°C.
May in Prague has an ideal climate and mild temperatures. The trees and gardens are in bloom and many Prague residents start to sit on the terraces and drink a good beer.
May can sometimes be very rainy, so pack a k-way or umbrella.
Average temperatures range from 9°C to 19°C.

July is the hottest month of the year in the Czech Republic. Temperatures can sometimes rise to 40°C, which is, we admit, difficult to bear in the middle of the city. Fortunately, there are plenty of water activities on the Vltava River to cool down and the swimming pools in Prague are also a solution if you are too hot. Pack a bottle of water and sunscreen in your backpack!
Average temperatures are between 14°C and 24°C.
August in Prague is generally cooler than July, although temperatures remain high. At the end of the day, the temperatures are more pleasant to enjoy a nice evening on the terrace. Heavy thunderstorms sometimes appear, accompanied by rain. In August 2002, the city of Prague was hit by very heavy flooding, which damaged a large part of the capital.
Average temperatures range from 14°C to 23°C.
