Troja Château

The Baroque Troja Chateau is among the most remarkable examples of early Baroque architecture in Prague. It is open from the beginning of April till the end of October and it offers visitors a richly decorated interior with murals and frescos, temporary exhibitions held by the City Gallery of Prague and occasional concerts.

The chateau was built in the 17th century as the summer seat of the Count of Sternberg's family. In his design, the architect, Jean Baptiste Mathey, was inspired mainly by a type of Roman suburban villa. Besides, when you enter the grounds of the villa, you can't help feeling like you've found yourself at an Italian mansion. The palace is surrounded by a vast French-style garden with an orangery and is dominated by massive steps fitted with sculptures from the workshops of renowned Baroque artists.

You will find a program for current exhibitions here. The exhibitions here focus mainly on older sculptural works, ceramics, porcelain or applied art, but contemporary Czech artists are also represented.

A visit to the Troja Chateau can also be combined with a visit to the Prague zoo or the botanical gardens, which are located in very close proximity to the chateau.Not far from the chateau, you can also visit the Count of Sternberg's one time wine depository. These very interesting caverns also have a restaurant, called Svatá Klára, where you can enjoy a dinner.
